Introductory NLP Workshop ~ 11/11/17 ~ Uptown Suites

Workshop; Introductions – Why are people here?

I am a certified Neuro Linguistic Programming Practitioner – Educator, a mother, and grandmother – working on my Masters Degree, to be completed this December 2017.  We have 15 participants in the Workshop ~ all here to learn about NLP and to become a better communicator.

Introduction/Meaning of NLP – Neuro linguistic programming – addresses three factors involved in the human experience; Neurology, Language and Programming.

Neuro – Nervous System – which we gather and process information through our five senses –

Sight – Visual, Hearing – Auditory, Touch – Kinesthetic, Smell – Olfactory, and Taste – Gustatory

Linguistic – Language is a filter of our understanding – we assign our information to a mental map – there are six things we can do inside our minds – we can create and recall –

Pictures, Sounds, Feelings, Tastes, Smells, Words (self-talk)

Programming – our known patterns, including our behaviors and habits – can be a detriment or advantage – good news, everything that can be learned, can be unlearned.

History of NLP

Neuro linguistic programming (NLP) was founded in the early 1970s by a psychology student – Richard Bandler, and John Grander, an Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of California – they studied three therapists of that time – these excellent achievers – Hypnotherapist, Milton Erickson – Virginia Satir, pioneer of Family Therapy and Fritz Perls, who later discovered Gestalt Therapy.

Philosophy of NLP – The Presuppositions of NLP

NLP presuppositions

  1. Communication is redundant. You are always communicating in all three representational systems.
  2. The meaning of your communication is the response you get (regardless of your intention).
  3. People respond to their own maps of reality, not reality itself.
  4. Requisite variety: the element in any system with the greatest flexibility will be the controlling element.
  5. People work perfectly. No one is wrong or broken.
  6. Choice is better than no choice.
  7. People always make the best choice available to them at the time.
  8. Every behavior is useful in some context.
  9. Behind every behavior is a positive intention.
  10. Anyone can do anything. If one person can do something, it is possible to model it and teach it to someone else.
  11. Mind and body are one single system.
  12. People already have all the resources they need. What they need is to be able to access those resources at appropriate times and places.
  13. There is no such thing as failure, only feedback. Anything that is worth doing well is worth doing badly at first.
  14. Chunking down. Anything can be accomplished by anyone if you break down the task into small enough chunks.
